Take Refuge In Your Body
“O friend, understand.
The body is like the ocean, rich with hidden treasures.
Open your innermost chamber
And light its lamp,
Within the body are gardens,
Rare flowers, peacocks; the inner music;
Within the body a lake of bliss,
On it, the white soul-swans take their joy.” ~Mirabai
When I take the time to re-connect with my body, follow my breath, and just simply feel myself fully as as I am in the moment, what arises is my innate clarity. In times where confusion runs thick in the air, it is important to remember that I hold within in me the capacity for wisdom and strength at all times.
This week, as I experienced huge waves of overwhelm, I took refuge in my body. Over and over, I took the time to pause, to breathe deeply, to feel and move my body, to take in my surroundings. Connecting to my body in this way helped me to see that confusion, overwhelm, and anxiety are but clouds passing by. They are not me. I am the brilliant clear sky, always there, ready to show up with kindness towards myself and others.
As a Yoga Therapist, I feel honoured to offer a place where individuals can begin to allow themselves the opportunity to really take refuge in their bodies. With a little stillness and support, the nervous system can calm, the mind and body can re-unite, and from this connection a great sense of clarity arises. Amazing!
I encourage you to take some time for your body this week. Take a walk, take a bath, dance, stretch! Do it mindfully. Stay connected to your whole body breathing as much as possible. When your mind wanders, come back! And feel your whole body breathe once again. Try it out! See what happens.
